The Director of ESL from 1985 to 2001 was Vernon L. Smith, 2002 Nobel Laureate in Economics. Since its inception, the ESL has been a leading laboratory in the study of economic behavior and market performance. Research covers many aspects of economic decision-making, strategic behavior, and performance of market institutions. ESL research is consistently supported by grants from the National Science Foundation and is published in leading journals in economics, game theory, econometrics, management science, finance, and accounting.

It's been a while since I comprehensively updated this page, but I've kept updating my Market Design Blog. You can find my latest updates by searching for 2/9/16 on this page; they mostly concern organ donations and medical matches. I am the Craig and Susan McCaw Professor of Economics at Stanford (and the Gund Professor Emeritus of Economics and Business Administration at Harvard). Right after moving to Stanford I shared the 2012 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics. My research is in game theory, experimental economics, and market design (for which game theory, experimentation, and computation are complementary tools).

In 2016, the Laboratory celebrated its 65th anniversary of service to the nation.
The areas that constitute the core of the work performed at Lincoln Laboratory are sensors, information extraction (signal processing and embedded computing), communications, and integrated sensing and decision support, all supported by a broad research base in advanced electronics. Research at the Laboratory includes projects in air and missile defense, space surveillance technology, tactical systems, biological and chemical defense, homeland protection, communications, cybersecurity, and information sciences. The Laboratory takes projects from the initial concept stage, through simulation and analysis, to design and prototyping, and finally to field demonstration. |

The Open Science grid consists of computing and storage elements at over 100 individual sites spanning the United States. These sites are primarily at universities and national labs and range in size from a few hundred to tens of thousands of CPU cores. The distributed nature of these resource providers allows users from a single VO to submit their jobs at a single entry point and have them execute at whatever resource is most available. |

CACR's applied research, funded by the National Science Foundation, the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Energy, and others, identifies and addresses difficult cybersecurity problems facing public and private communities, while inviting continued collaboration to foster greater innovation and creativity.

The Stanford Cyber Initiative (the Initiative) was created in late 2014 with a $15 million grant from The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation (Hewlett). The Initiative is a central hub on campus for policy-relevant research across disciplines to address the opportunities and challenges raised by cyber-technologies in our social systems.

Unlike other disciplines of engineering, our problems do not originate in physics or chemistry. Our problems originate from economics and history and such, and the only tools we have at our command are derived from mathematics, in fact, the mathematics of the last 50 years. Princeton University is an educational institution, not an institution for training individuals to perform certain tasks. ORFE is liberal engineering education par excellence: you are not trained for any particular task, you are educated in a whole range of intellectual activities, and you are free to choose the work that you like or the paths that you want to explore. To that end, we give our graduates a strong background in mathematics and engineering, and they accumulate an understanding of economics and other complex human activities. We are sure that upon graduation, our students are ready to meet the challenges of the world.

This agenda covers a broad range of specialized disciplines, such as biochemistry, biophysics, molecular biology, genetics, cell physiology, cell anatomy, immunology, and neurobiology. The types of living organisms from which the departmental faculty draws its working materials are as diverse as its disciplinary specializations, ranging from viruses and microbes through plants, roundworms, annelids, arthropods, and mollusks to fish, amphibia, and mammals. The faculty of the department is organized into five divisions: Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Cell and Developmental Biology, Genetics and Development, Immunology, and Neurobiology.

Submitted Jan 14, 2017 to Science Research Groups » Mechanical Engineering In the heart of New York Citys Little Italy, Honeybee Robotics creates robots, flight subsystems, automated drills and other machines destined for work on Earth, Mars, and beyond. Founded in 1983 as a systems integrator using off-the-shelf robots, the company quickly gained a reputation for its innovative design skills and creative problem solving. Honeybee received its first NASA contract in 1986 and has subsequently worked on more than 90 others in addition to completing projects for the Department of Defense and companies such as Coca Cola, Con Edison, 3M, Nike, and IBM. Honeybee is a privately held company that is headquartered in New York City. Honeybee Chairman, Stephen Gorevan, was named Co-Investigator for the Athena Science Payload on NASAs 2003 Mars Exploration Rover Mission. He will be stationed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, CA, along with five other Honeybee engineers, to operate the Rock Abrasion Tool for the length of the mission. Honeybee Robotics is a NASA-approved provider of space flight hardware.

Submitted Jan 14, 2017 to Science Research Groups » Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences The U.S. launched the Joint Global Ocean Flux Study (JGOFS) in the late 1980s to study the ocean carbon cycle. An ambitious goal was set to understand the controls on the concentrations and fluxes of carbon and associated nutrients in the ocean. A new field of ocean biogeochemistry emerged with an emphasis on quality measurements of carbon system parameters and interdisciplinary field studies of the biological, chemical and physical process which control the ocean carbon cycle. As we studied ocean biogeochemistry, we learned that our simple views of carbon uptake and transport were severely limited, and a new "wave" of ocean science was born. U.S. JGOFS has been supported primarily by the U.S. National Science Foundation in collaboration with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the Department of Energy and the Office of Naval Research. U.S. JGOFS, ended in 2005 with the conclusion of the Synthesis and Modeling Project (SMP).

As NASA Enterprises integrate these emerging networking technologies into their activities, NASA will be able to revolutionize mission applications involving space exploration, the design of air and space vehicles, Earth system modeling, and access to information contained in vast databases. Organizationally NREN is the research networking component of the Computing, Networking and Information Systems (CNIS) Project within the Computing, Information and Communications Technologies (CICT) Program.
