Research at the Media Lab comprises interconnected developments in an unusual range of disciplines. Lab research is now exploring new frontiers, such as wireless, "viral" communications; wearable computing; machines capable of common-sense reasoning; new forms of artistic expression; and how children learn. Our work ranges from basic research in computational linguistics to key applications in human language technology, and covers areas such as sentence understanding, automatic question answering, machine translation, syntactic parsing and tagging, sentiment analysis, and models of text and visual scenes, as well as applications of natural language processing to the digital humanities and computational social sciences.

In particular, we are focussing on the discovery of morphemes, which are the primitive units of syntax, the smallest individually meaningful elements in the utterances of a language. Morphemes are important in automatic generation and recognition of a language, especially in languages in which words may have many different inflected forms.

Scientific and engineering questions have provided a source of vitality to, among other fields, algebra, geometry and analysis.
A concern with logical and statistical quantities – information – is central to present-day science and engineering. The pertinent mathematics is being actively developed, as disciplines such as algorithms, complexity, communications and control motivate questions in adjoining fields such as probability, combinatorics, algebra and harmonic analysis. A common framework supporting the study of information and computation across disciplines is as yet a distant goal. The Caltech CMI is a home in which unfettered development of the mathematical foundations of information and computation can be influenced by, and influence in turn, progress in engineering and science. |
Submitted Dec 02, 2016 to Science Research Groups » Earth Science <img src="http://www.elementlist.com/images/alaskaeqlogo.jpg" alt="alaska earthquake observatory" width="126" height="104" align="right">Located at the Geophysical Institute of the University of Alaska Fairbanks, the Alaska Earthquake Information Center receives data from more than 350 seismic sites. AEIC serves as an integration of all seismic networks within Alaska, also archiving and processing data from the Pacific Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center in Palmer, Alaska, (~20 sites), and the Alaska Volcano Observatory in Fairbanks and Anchorage (~90 sites). All sites in the network operate with a real-time data acquisition system at the Geophysical Institute. The network is further strengthened by three Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) sites, at College, Kodiak Island, and Adak. The Alaska Earthquake Information Center, a member of the Council of the National Seismic System (CNSS), is funded by the State of Alaska, NOAA, and USGS. Alaska Earthquake Information Center personnel locate and report about 22,000 earthquakes each year, and advise federal and state officials of each major earthquake's location and size within 30 minutes. In addition, the earthquake catalogs generated by AEIC are fundamental for seismic hazard studies, because they are the most important element in defining the seismic source zones and the level of seismicity. Researchers from MILA have pioneered the field of deep learning and deep neural networks (both discriminative and generative) and their applications to vision, speech and language. MILA is world-renowned for many breakthroughs in developing novel deep learning algorithms and applying them to various domains. They include neural language modelling, neural machine translation, object recognition, structured output generative modelling and neural speech recognition. |
