This includes a graduate and postdoctoral training program. The Center's research focus is currently on full-genome comparative analyses, protein structure prediction, protein function identification and domain dissection. Our work has led to the formulation and testing of hypotheses in the areas of molecular evolution, gene regulation, developmental genetics, and protein structure-function relationships.

Submitted Nov 14, 2005 to Science Research Groups » Earth Science The Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences (EAPS) has broad intellectual horizons that encompass the solid Earth, its fluid envelopes, and its diverse neighbors throughout the solar system and beyond. The Department seeks to understand the fundamental processes defining the origin, evolution and current state of these systems and to use this understanding to predict future states. EAPS is notable for emphasis on interdisciplinary problems. The Earth System Initiative (ESI) was formed in 2002 to encourage and coordinate multidisciplinary research efforts in the earth sciences and engineering at MIT. The Earth Resources Laboratory is broadening its base to include a wider range of geophysical, geological, and environmental topics. The Center for Global Change Science (including the Climate Modeling Initiative) and the Program in Atmospheric, Oceans and Climate continue to foster cross-fertilization among all areas of the earth sciences that control the climate system. Research activities are gradually broadening so that geologists are now working with oceanographers and atmospheric scientists, and models of the climate system have been constructed both for the modern system and for times deep in the geological past. Department faculty also continue to play leading roles in the MIT Joint Program on the Science and Policy of Global Change. EAPS has vigorous graduate educational programs in geology and geochemistry, geophysics, atmospheres, oceans, climate, and planetary science. The EAPS graduate program includes students in the MIT/Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) Joint Program.

The past five years has seen the expansion of our program into planetary and atmospheric sciences. The most recent faculty addition is Assistant Professor Patrick Chuang who joined the faculty in July of 2001. Prof. Chuang is an atmospheric chemist with particular interests in observational constraints on aerosols and atmospheric pollutants. We are interested in the problems of predicting biological function of genes and gene products from their primary sequence and structure (sometimes known as functional genomics). We are interested in predicting structure of protein and DNA from its sequence, and understanding how and when genes are expressed.

Within the broad field of organic chemistry, there are research groups pursuing the total synthesis and the biosynthesis of natural products, the development of new synthetic methodology, the application and mechanisms of organometallic reactions, the intricacies of biochemical reaction mechanisms, and the dynamics of photochemical and free radical reactions. The research in inorganic and physical-inorganic chemistry spans the gamut from inorganic glasses, bioinorganic polymers and metalloenzyme models to work with multimetallic molecules, electrochemistry, and models for hydrodesulfurization. Research in biochemistry includes studies of enzyme mechanisms; the relationship between DNA sequence, conformation, and biological properties; the insertion of non-natural amino acids into proteins; and the in vivo NMR of biological tissues, organs, and organisms. Finally, physical chemistry and chemical physics are represented by theoretical and experimental programs focusing on surfaces, clusters, and liquids as well as on the development of state-of-the-art spectroscopic and ultrafast-electron-diffraction techniques.

Submitted Nov 13, 2005 to Science Research Groups » Mathematics Over a century ago, Maurice Couette created a simple device to measure the viscosity of a fluid. He placed the fluid between two concentric cylinders and measured the amount of torque required to turn the inner cylinder. As one increases the rotation rate of the inner cylinder, more torque is required. However, at a certain rotation rate, the variation of torque with cylinder speed changes abruptly. This occurs at the onset of an instability, the sudden change of the pattern of fluid flow as a parameter is varied. In this case, a series of circulating cells known as Couette-Taylor vortices emerge in the fluid flow . The presence of this instability places limits on the utility of Couette's viscometer. Many fluid instabilities have such practical consequences; for instance, the presence of fingering instabilities during oil extraction can mean that half of the oil in a reservoir is left in the ground. At the Center for Nonlinear Dynamics, we study fluid instabilities and pattern formation in many fluid systems.

Diverse systems exhibit remarkably similar, sometimes even universal behavior. Studies in the Center of solid, fluid, granular, low-temperature gas, chemical, and biological systems involve laboratory experiments, numerical simulations, and theoretical analyses. Problems currently being examined include instabilities at fluid interfaces, dynamics of fluidized beds, spatial patterns and shock waves in granular flows, pattern formation in chemical reaction-diffusion systems, crack propagation in crystalline and amorphous materials, quantum chaos with ultra-cold atoms, nonlinear dynamics of bose condensates, general methods of laser cooling, viscoelasticity of actin networks, elastic properties of normal and pathological biological cells, and enhancement of neuronal growth.

It is a subcenter within the Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences (ICES). The faculty, staff, and students in the CNA are actively involved in carrying out research in numerical anlaysis, writing technical papers, and coding mathematical software. Our scientific research contributes to knowledge in numerical analysis, scientific computation, and mathematical software development. This is useful not only to faculty and students computer users at the local level but also to a larger group of mathematical software users worldwide.
