Submitted Dec 17, 2016 to Science Research Opportunities The Emerging Scholar Award is part of Facebook’s ongoing commitment to identifying promising doctoral students and supporting them and their research throughout their careers. The Award is designed to specifically support talented students from underrepresented minority groups and encourage them to continue their PhD studies, pursue innovative research, and engage with the broader research community.
The Emerging Scholar Award is open to first or second year PhD students who are members of a minority group that is underrepresented in the technology sector. The award is open to students at universities in the US and abroad who are enrolled during the current academic year and studying computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, system architecture, or a related area. Applications will be evaluated based on the strength of the student’s proposed research and their recommendation letters. |

The Smithsonian awards fellowships and other academic appointments to visiting scholars, scientists, and students from universities, museums, and other research institutions in the U.S. and abroad. There are 22 different fellowship programs officially administered at the Smithsonian, and many more unofficial opportunities supported by individual researcher grants and private donations.

Submitted Jan 02, 2006 to Science Research Opportunities The Office of Higher Education (formerly the Office of University Programs) oversees activities and programs at Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) designed to maintain and broaden the Center's interaction with the higher education community. Special attention is directed to local colleges and universities along the northern and eastern seaboard and aerospace-oriented institutions nationwide having programs of mutual interest to Goddard. The Office manages NASA-wide fellowships and grants programs at GSFC, provides programmatic support for other university-related programs, within the various laboratories at GSFC, and develops new programs to enhance the GSFC research and development missions through increased contact with the university community. NASA's programs deal with students at the graduate and undergraduate levels, faculty members, researchers, and in some cases, the teachers of teachers. In addition, the Office serves as a point of contact for college and university faculty and students interested in exploring and developing cooperative relationships with GSFC. Special attention is paid to cultural diversity.

Submitted Dec 27, 2005 to Science Research Opportunities The Teacher Academy in Physical Science (TAPS) program is a four-week summer program for teachers of grades 5 through 8 designed to build teachers' skills in the physical sciences. The 2006 program (July 5th - August 2nd) will include the following components: a course in basic geophysics (50 hours), lectures on current research (20 hours), exploration and creation of physical science classroom activities (40 hours), and completion of a team-based research project under the guidance of Lab staff (50 hours). TAPS takes place at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Lab) in Newport News, Virginia. Teachers receive a stipend of $800.00 per week.

Submitted Dec 21, 2005 to Science Research Opportunities Argonne National Laboratory's Communications & Public Affairs Division offers one full-time science-writing internship each summer for undergraduate students or students who graduated in May or June. Former Argonne interns subsequently landed reporting and editing jobs with Science, Science News , R&D, Chemical & Engineering News, The Journal of the National Cancer Institute, the International Medical News Group and the Elgin Courier-News, and as science writers at Cal Tech, Purdue, the American Chemical Society, Ames Laboratory, Argonne, and the University of Chicago Hospitals. Participants must be full-time students at an accredited college or university and must have a strong interest in science-related journalism. Participants will work at least ten 40-hour weeks on science news and feature stories and magazine articles for the Argonne News, Explorer and the Argonne Web site, as well as related news releases and media contacts. The internship requires a strong background in journalism and an interest in science.

Submitted Nov 14, 2005 to Science Research Opportunities The California Institute of Technology announces two fellowships in Geological and Planetary Sciences. The O.K. Earl and Texaco Postdoctoral Fellowships are awards funded by endowments from Orrin K. Earl, Jr. and the Texaco Philanthropic Foundation. Each fellowship carries an annual stipend of $46,000 plus a research expense fund of $2,000 per year and one-way travel costs to Pasadena. The duration of each appointment is normally two years, contingent upon completion of the Ph.D. degree and good progress in the first year, beginning with the 2006-07 Fall term. Fellows are eligible to participate in Caltechs health and dental program. Materials in support of an application should include a curriculum vitae, list of publications, and a one-page statement of research interests. These should be sent in word or .pdf format to: chairman@gps.caltech.edu. The candidate should also request that three letters of reference be sent to the same email address. All applications and references are due by Friday, December 16, 2005.

Submitted Nov 13, 2005 to Science Research Opportunities The widespread penetration of mathematics into almost every area of science and technology has vastly expanded the opportunities available to mathematicians, both in traditional areas of pure and applied research and in emerging interdisciplinary areas. The UCLA Vigre Program will seek to create an environment in which students and post-docs can explore and participate in these important mathematical developments. Building on the strength of existing UCLA programs, we will introduce new initiatives that will broadly impact the department at both structural and cultural levels. The UCLA VIGRE Program has three major components: postdoctoral, graduate, and undergraduate.

Fellows collaborate with media professionals at radio and television stations, newspapers, and magazines. As part of their job, the student-scientists and their host-journalists strive to make science news easy for the public to understand. Criteria: Applicants must be enrolled as college or university students (in their senior year, or in any graduate or post graduate level) in the natural, physical, health, engineering, computer, or social sciences or mathematics in order to apply. Post doctoral applicants must apply for the summer fellowship within one year of defending their thesis. Students enrolled in English, journalism, science journalism, or other non-technical fields are not eligible for these fellowships.
Successful applicants will attend an orientation at AAAS headquarters at the beginning of the summer and a wrap-up session at the end of the summer. They will prepare reports on the progress of their fellowships throughout their placement. |
