A science blog by Derek Lowe and hosted by Corante. Lowe, an Arkansan by birth, got his BA from Hendrix College and his PhD in organic chemistry from Duke before spending time in Germany on a Humboldt Fellowship on his post-doc. He's worked for several major pharmaceutical companies since 1989 on drug discovery projects against schizophrenia, Alzheimer's, diabetes, osteoporosis and other diseases.

This site is a little project that lets me make fun of some things and sense of others. I use it to think a little more relationally without resorting to doing actual math.

Here are some thoughts from a postdoc working at the interface of synthetic chemistry and biology. His thoughts might include: chemistry, science, work, employment hunting, life in general, politics and very random musings.

While working on my thesis, my research became more and more focused on a single species (Japanese knotweed), and I was no longer keeping up with developments regarding other invasives. I started the ISW in April of 2002, with two goals in mind: 1) Find a way to keep up with current events and 2) Find a way to keep up with current internet trends. With a public record of my efforts, I have found that I am less likely to "slack off" and stop keeping an eye out for important invasive species issues. As of January 2004, the ISW has over 600 entries, covering a full range of topics, from legal issues, to early detection warnings, to the use of invasive species in marketable products. Please enjoy your visit, take a moment to catch up on current events, and use the search tool to find older posts about topics you are interested in.

Jennifer Saylor is a professional freelance writer and later-in-life college student in Asheville, NC. She lives with her cats in a 1922 bungalow in a neighborhood full of birdsong and the sound of the wind in the trees. She is currently seeking an undergraduate degree in Chemistry at UNC-Asheville. (Going to college in your thirties is not for wimps. College chemistry is not for wimps, either.) Jennifer is a mutant bizarro hybrid half-artist, half-science person, and she makes her living writing nonfiction.

I’m the John Fleck who went to Upland High School in the 1970s, Whitman College thereafter. I’m also the John Fleck who writes about science for the Albuquerque Journal. I’m currently at work on a book about drought, which is why you see so much babbling about climate here. I’m not the other John Fleck, though I once got his mail.
