Submitted Apr 20, 2005 to Scientific Software Computational Infrastructure for Geodynamics (CIG) is a membership-governed organization that supports and promotes Earth science by developing and maintaining software for computational geophysics and related fields. On behalf of its Member Institutions, CIG is now working under a Cooperative Agreement with the National Science Foundation to develop, support, and disseminate open source software for the greater geodynamics community. CIG consists of: (a) a coordinated effort to develop reusable, well-documented and open-source geodynamics software; (b) the basic building blocks an infrastructure layer of software by which state-of-the-art modeling codes can be quickly assembled; (c) extension of existing software frameworks to interlink multiple codes and data through a superstructure layer; (d) strategic partnerships with the larger world of computational science and geoinformatics; and (e) specialized training and workshops for both the geodynamics and larger Earth science communities.

Submitted Apr 18, 2005 to Scientific Software Audio Abacus is a project of the Psychology Department's Sonification Lab at the Georgia Institute of Technology, overseen by Bruce Walker, PhD. Sonifications and auditory graphs are very good at providing information about trends and patterns. However, extracting the exact (or nearly exact) value of the data at a given point is a different task, and requires a different auditory interface. One approach is to have each note of a scale represent a data value. Several approaches have been taken in this vein. Our Audio Abacus takes a new twist on this method, and has been implemented as a simple software package that allows the listener to estimate the actual values of the data, in addition to the overal trends of the data set.

Submitted Jan 01, 2005 to Scientific Software Great circle mapper displays a map depicting the great circle path between locations and computes the distance along that path. A great circle path is the shortest path on the surface of a sphere between two points on that sphere. Technically, the term geodesic path should be used in this page since Earth is not a true sphere, but the great circle terminology is common usage. Locations may be FAA, IATA, or ICAO airport codes, or latitude and longitude.

Submitted Dec 21, 2004 to Scientific Software The Global Change Master Directory (GCMD) offers online descriptive information about environmental and Earth science data sets located throughout the world. As an additional service for the Earth sciences community, GCMD offers descriptive information about commercial and non-commercial data services that assists its user community in analyzing, processing, and evaluating Earth science data sets. The system is based on the same architecture and design of the current GCMD data system. A service description is entered into a searchable data base. The Service Entry Resource Format (SERF) record contains all pertinent information to the service.

Submitted Oct 21, 2004 to Scientific Software MB-System is an open source software package for the processing and display of bathymetry and backscatter imagery data derived from multibeam, interferometry, and sidescan sonars. The source code for MB-System is freely available (for free) by anonymous ftp (including "point and click" access through these web pages). A complete description is provided in web pages accessed through links below. MB-System was originally developed at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University (L-DEO) and is now a collaborative effort between the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) and L-DEO. The National Science Foundation has provided the primary support for MB-System development since 1993. The Packard Foundation has provided significant support through MBARI since 1998. Additional support has derived from SeaBeam Instruments (1994-1997), NOAA (2002-2004), and others.

Submitted Oct 11, 2004 to Scientific Software The National Science Foundation Middleware Initiative (NMI) addresses a critical need for software infrastructure to support scientific and engineering research. Begun in late 2001, NMI funds the design, development, testing, and deployment of middleware, a key enabling technology upon which customized applications are built. Specialized NMI teams are defining open-source, open-architecture standards that are creating important new avenues of on-line collaboration and resource sharing. In addition to the production-quality software and implementation standards created by those large systems-integration teams, NMI funds smaller projects that focus on experimental middleware applications.

Submitted Oct 08, 2004 to Scientific Software These tools are used to create data images for the Atmospheric Visualization Collection at www.nsdl.arm.gov. Through this collaborative workspace our goal is to make these codes easier to modify for use on other datasets as well as more useful for education and research with the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement dataset. Various NSDL Communication tools are available to allow contributions to this project. Your participation in making our goal possible would be greatly appreciated. We are also using the NSDL Communication Portal's Wiki tool for developing lesson plans. Educators are encouraged to use this "lesson plan sandbox" to collaborate on development of lesson plans that use our atmospheric data.

Submitted Oct 05, 2004 to Scientific Software GMT is an open source collection of ~60 tools for manipulating geographic and Cartesian data sets (including filtering, trend fitting, gridding, projecting, etc.) and producing Encapsulated PostScript File (EPS) illustrations ranging from simple x-y plots via contour maps to artificially illuminated surfaces and 3-D perspective views. GMT supports ~30 map projections and transformations and comes with support data such as coastlines, rivers, and political boundaries. GMT is developed and maintained by Paul Wessel and Walter H. F. Smith with help from a global set of volunteers, and is supported by the National Science Foundation. It is released under the GNU General Public License.
