Who is the World's Sexiest Scientist? You decide!
|
We're tired of scientists being portrayed as boring, unstylish geeks. So what are we going to do about it? We're holding the First Annual Element List Sexiest Scientist Contest, that's what! Yes, you, dear Element List readers, will have the opportunity to nominate yourselves or the sexy scientists you admire most to be the Sexiest Scientist of the Year. One male and one female scientist will win. To be eligible, persons nominated for the Sexiest Scientist Contest must (1) be living (Einstein is not eligible!), (2) have a Ph.D. from an accredited university, and (3) have published at least one first-authored paper in a scholarly, peer-reviewed scientific journal. E-mail a picture of your sexy scientist nominee (in GIF or JPG format) along with their name, contact information, and brief professional background by October 31, 2005, to submissions@elementlist.com. Eligible entries will posted on the Element List website for voting by Element List readers, and the winners will be announced in December. |

This is really the stupidest idea I've seen in a long time. Notice how other countries are too busy doing science to worry about whether their uneducated population thinks its 'cool' or not? We're supposed to demean ourselves to combat the terrible face of American scientific geekyness? Hope you will be also accepting nominations for smartest ditch digger and tree planter. That way we can nobly help them overcome society's perception of them as dumb and strong, by a nomination for something nobody is going to care about anyways.

Would be nice to see some 'fun' introduced to the science field. Does it really belittle scientists? Maybe it will improve the scientists...many could use a shave and a haircut as it is. Watch a few shows on tv and you will see what I mean.

This is interesting. This post has only been up for 20 days and already it is the 2nd most clicked-on post on the Element website with 119 hits. The most popular post, by comparison, is the Craigslist feature, which currently has 132 hits but has been up since March!!
Did this contest already finish? Where are the winners listed?

I'd like to vote Kirsten Sanford from This Week In Science as a "sexy scientist" nominee.
