GPW version 2 provides estimates of the population of the world in 1990 and 1995, both population counts (raw counts) and population densities (per square km). National figures have been reconciled to be consistent with United Nations population estimates for those years; unadjusted data are also available. Both images and data are accessible and downloadable.

GTOPO30 is a global digital elevation model (DEM) with a horizontal grid spacing of 30 arc seconds (approximately 1 kilometer). GTOPO30 was derived from several raster and vector sources of topographic information. For easier distribution, GTOPO30 has been divided into tiles which can be selected from the map shown above. Detailed information on the characteristics of GTOPO30 including the data distribution format, the data sources, production methods, accuracy, and hints for users, is found in the GTOPO30 README file.

GulfBase is a database of resources about the Gulf of Mexico. The goal of this website is to regroup, synthesize, and make freely available Gulf of Mexico research information. Our vision is that GulfBase will help researchers, policy makers, and the general public work together to insure long-term sustainable use and conservation of the Gulf of Mexico.

The primary purpose of the International HapMap Project, as described on the Project's web site (www.hapmap.org) and in the recent paper on the Project (Nature 426:789-796, Dec. 18, 2003), is to develop and publish a global analysis of patterns of polymorphism and of linkage disequilibrium and use this information to guide selection of tag SNPs across the entire human genome. As is now standard practice in large-scale genomic research projects, the International HapMap Consortium follows a policy of releasing data as quickly as possible, anticipating that they will be useful for many investigators. The Consortium anticipates that the Project's data will be used in many ways, such as for developing new analytical methods, in understanding patterns of polymorphism, linkage disequilibrium, and haplotype associations, and in guiding selection of markers to map genes affecting specific diseases. Thus, the Consortium recognizes that the data are available to all users for any purpose.

Find centroid moment tensor data for earthquakes. The main database runs from January, 1977, to about 6 months before the present. Also included in this search are some CMTs for 1976 and Quick CMTs (from the end of the main catalog through the present). The global catalog includes moderate to large earthquakes only.

National Weather Service history is rich with images of scientific accomplishment, technological innovation and community service. The photos in these archives help tell the stories of our people and their service to communities across America, from telegraph operators of the Army Signal Service in the 1870s to the women who joined our ranks during World War II; from pioneers early in the 20th century who took advantage of the development of aviation and wireless radio communications to the highly-educated scientists and engineers of today who are coupling radars, satellites, networks of observing systems and advanced computers to deliver the world's best weather and climate services to our nation.

A challenge facing researchers today is that of piecing together and analyzing the plethora of data currently being generated through the Human Genome Project and scores of smaller projects. NCBI's Web site serves an an integrated, one-stop, genomic information infrastructure for biomedical researchers from around the world so that they may use these data in their research efforts.

The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology is a university research consortium dedicated to exploring the Earth's interior through the collection and distribution of seismographic earthquake data. IRIS programs contribute to scholarly research, education, earthquake hazard mitigation, and the verification of a Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty. Support for IRIS comes from the National Science Foundation, other federal agencies, universities, and private foundations.

The Data Distribution Centre (DDC) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has been established to facilitate the timely distribution of a consistent set of up-to-date scenarios of changes in climate and related environmental and socio-economic factors for use in climate impacts assessments. The intention is that these new assessments can feed into the review process of the IPCC.
