More than 95% of the Earth's animal species are invertebrates (animals without backbones). They can be found in most habitats. Many are found only in the sea and some groups living on the land are found world-wide. There are thought to be between 3 million and 15 million species in the world (47 000 species of vertebrates). Invertebrates are important in the functions and processes of most ecosystems. They are spectacular, abundant and diverse. They include the Giant Squid at 18m long and gall mites, which are less than .25mm long. Search the site to learn more about invertebrate zoology.

LearningGEOSCIENCE: EAGE's e-learning journal is a distribution channel for exciting and interactive multimedia learning content in the sciences of geology, geophysics and petroleum. It is the first of its kind and will hopefully set a standard for how to communicate high-quality multimedia learning experiences. Instead of providing paper-based articles, learningGEOSCIENCE contains interactive multimedia learning experiences; each takes 15-60 minutes to go through. These are much more suitable for learning over the Internet than paper-based articles in PDF-format, and are generally much more exciting.

Utilizing over 800 scanned documents, photographs, audio clips and video excerpts, this website narrates the breathless details of the pursuit of the discovery of the double helix structure of DNA. Scattered throughout the project are images of a number of very important and extremely rare items, all of which are held within The Valley Library's Ava Helen and Linus Pauling Papers, and many of which have not been previously displayed. Also featured are two original documents hitherto unknown to scholars interested in this period. It is expected that this website will serve as a primary reference point for individuals interested in the history of DNA -- both researchers and lay people alike.

These pages are designed to help students and teachers understand the mathematical ideas behind the beautiful geometric fractal images known as the Mandelbrot and Julia sets. Included are a series of interactive explorations that will help you discover the meaning of such topics as Julia Set Explosions, Rotation Numbers, Bifurcations, and much more. You can use this site as a companion to the book called "The Mandelbrot and Julia Sets: A Toolkit of Dynamics Activities" or you can use it as a stand-alone tool for exploring the incredible mathematics behind these images.

A team of researchers taking part in the National Science Foundation MARGINS initiative traveled to the Mariana Islands at the western edge of the Pacific Ocean to answer some of the most challenging questions of plate tectonics. They seek a better understanding of subduction zones where material is routed from Earth's surface to its interior. What they find might also reveal how the atmosphere that sustains life on Earth was created and how it continues to evolve. This Web site will take you to nine volcanic islands in the chain, offering a guided tour through photos, video and day-by-day accounts of what the research team found. Along the way, get to know the history of the Mariana Islands. Now a commonwealth of the United States, the Marianas' story is one of occupation by a succession of different peoples and includes a pivotal role as the site of history-making events during World War II.

When you buy a car, follow a recipe, or decorate your home, you're using math principles. People have been using these same principles for thousandseven millionsof years, across countries and continents. Whether you're sailing a boat off the coast of Japan or building a house in Peru, you're using math to get things done. Join us as we explore how math can help us in our daily lives. In this exhibit, you'll look at the language of numbers through common situations, such as playing games or cooking. Put your decision-making skills to the test by deciding whether buying or leasing a new car is right for you, and predict how much money you can save for your retirement by using an interest calculator.
