Volcanic arcs and oceanic trenches partly encircling the Pacific Basin form the so-called Ring of Fire, a zone of frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. The volcanic island arcs are parallel to, and always landward of, the trenches. For example, the island arc associated with the Aleutian Trench is represented by the long chain of volcanoes that make up the Aleutian Islands.

Follow cutting-edge research, including expeditions, to discover how seafloor volcanoes and vents create environments for extraordinary lifeforms. This website has been put together by the Education & Outreach team of Ridge 2000, a long-term program of research into mid-ocean ridges and related tectonic systems. Ridge 2000 is supported by the National Science Foundation under Grant Number 0116823. Researchers affiliated to the Ridge 2000 program come from over 50 universities and research institutions around the USA and abroad.

Explosive processes and the evolution of the universe. One of the most important discoveries of modern astronomy is that the universe is a stage for scenes of unimaginable violence. Ironically, neither life as we know it, nor the universe as presently constituted, would exist in the absence of such violent processes. This hypertext module gives an introduction to these ideas.

The Oxford VR Group is developing a three-dimensional simulated laboratory for the teaching of chemistry. This laboratory will be modelled using virtual reality techniques and it will contain interactive multimedia experiments. Essentially, the student will be able to move around the lab in a web browser window and choose to take part in experiments that are distributed around this virtual lab. Each experiment will make use of the latest multimedia technology. This will include: digitized video and animations of the experiment being carried out; animated three-dimensional simulations of chemical objects (including molecules); interactive sections where the student will be required to work out what is going on and answer questions; and links to other useful internet sites relating to that topic.

Water seems, at first sight, to be a very simple molecule, consisting of just two hydrogen atoms attached to an oxygen atom. Indeed, there are very few molecules that are smaller or lighter. The size of the water molecule, however, belies the complexity of its actions and its singular capabilities. Water's unique properties seem to fit ideally into the requirements for life as can no other molecule. A number of explanations of the complex behavior of liquid water have been published, many quite recently, with several stirring up great controversy. In this site, I have attempted to present these ideas in a self-consistent manner, which I hope will encourage both its understanding and further work.
