I'm James, a research microbiologist from London. I'm unable to keep my opinions on just about everything to myself, most of the time, so here is my blog with plenty of opinion! As well as science I'm particularly interested in politics (increasingly global politics), trains, architecture and planes to name just a few things that will appear here regularly!

On this website, my guest authors and editors and I hope to present interesting items from around the web on a daily basis, in the areas of science, design, literature, current affairs, art, and anything else we deem inherently fascinating. We want to provide you with a one-stop intellectual surfing experience by culling good stuff from all over and putting it in one place. In other words, we are what has come to be known as a "filter blog."

As in all our houses, we try to cast a broad net in Criticism. We want to discuss not only artistic ventures like movies and music but also cultural and political phenomena. We like some stuff. We don't like other things. But we're curious about it all. We try to catch some things as they happen and view others through glorious hindsight. Criticism publishes both short and longer pieces and is not afraid of the occasional poem. Criticism is our purview of the world at large through the rigorous application of our opinions.

I am a Red-State Serbian Jewish atheist liberal PhD student with Thesis-writing block and severe blogorrhea trying to understand the world by making strange connections between science, religion, brain, language and sex. My specialty is chronobiology (circadian rhythms and sleep). I teach introductory biology to adults at a community college.
