Description: Located on Torrey Pines Mesa in La Jolla, California, The Neurosciences Institute is a not-for-profit research center dedicated to "high risk - high payoff" research designed to discover the biological basis of higher-level brain functions in humans. The Neurosciences Institute was established in 1981 by Nobel Laureate Gerald M. Edelman, M.D., Ph.D., the current director. The Institute is unique in that it is supported entirely by private donations, intentionally small, group-oriented, interdisciplinary; and engaged in both theoretical and experimental neurobiology. Institute scientists have been responsible for many important discoveries involving consciousness, sleep, perception, music, memory, movement, behavior, and speech.
