Description: Materials scientists at JILA use advanced ultrashort-pulsed lasers to study semiconductors and optical fibers and extreme ultraviolet and x-ray probes to investigate chemical surfaces, polymers, nanoporous materials, and patterned thin-film structures. They also study the plasma chemistry and physics of selected atoms and molecules. Materials physics research is informing the development of more efficient solar cells and semiconductor devices; unique, nanoscale lithographic patterning; and the development of new nanotechnologies. Materials research is also extending our fundamental understanding of femtosecond lasers, ultrahigh-resolution microscopy, atomic-force microscopy, surface-based chemical reactions, and many-body physics, including the dynamics of excitons, phonons, and solitons.
